Vocational education and training

In vocational education and training (upper secondary school) teachers can be divided into three groups:

/typo3/

  • teachers in school education and training
  • trainers and training supervisors in companies (instruktører)
  • training facilitators in informal and formal workplace training

The qualification requirements for teachers are defined in national regulations. In principle there is no difference between teachers in vocational education and training and other teachers. Teachers have to have a qualification in the teaching subject and in the pedagogical area. Vocational teacher education is divided up into a three year bachelor and a three year master programme. A qualified vocational teacher must either complete vocational practical-pedagogical education or vocational teacher education.

The vocational practical-pedagogical education is a one-year programme (or two-year for part-time study) for students who already possess a vocational degree or other qualification. The study content is a bout pedagogical theory, vocational didactics and supervised teaching and training practice. Following requirements are necessary:

  • qualifications in professions/times relevant bachelor's degree and
  • two years of work experience and
  • two years of further studies (technical, professional, conducting) and
  • general university entrance qualification or recognition of non-formal qualifications.

The vocational teacher education is a comprehensive three-year bachelor program, which includes training and education. It qualifies for the teaching profession in the higher secondary level. The program can also be completed as part-time study.

The admission requirements are as follows:

  • vocational qualifications to higher secondary level and
  • Two years of relevant work experience
  • general university entrance qualifications or relevant non-formal qualifications, such as professional experience.

Trainers (instruktører) in enterprises have vocational qualification, but they don’t need teaching qualifications. Training supervisors (fagligeledere) in enterprises or other workplaces with apprentices must ensure that the training meets the requirements of the Education Act. Training facilitators who do not teach in formally approved educational institutions, have no formal qualification requirements.
