Understanding

In Germany, both, business education and development as well as vocational education (VET) can be described as the science and practice of vocational education and training. Thereby the context of profession and learning can be shown. The roots of business education and development as well as VET lie in the history of the vocational school and in teacher education. The terms business education and development and VET are established in a separate vocational teacher education. Since 1928 the term VET is brought into connection with the term “GewerbelehrerInnenausbildung” and the term business education and development is brought into connection with the term „Diplom-HandelslehrerInnenbildung“. But today the term teacher education has extended to the whole professional school system. Besides the vocational school it includes technical schools, for example technician schools as well as higher secondary vocational schools and vocational high schools.

 

Historically, the business education and development as well as VET have their roots in teacher education. Today the task is to educate educational personnel in science and they can work both in schools and enterprises. The centerpieces in an enterprise are educational fields of action as well as integrated organizational development and staff development.

 

The business education and development and VET are involved in science education and represent the consolidation of vocational education. In Germany, business education and development as well as VET are regarded as a branch of educational training which focuses on the economy.

 

Federalism is part of the political system in Germany, which means that Germany consists of small partly sovereign states. Thus the education system is the responsibility of the states. Taking this into account, this is also true for higher education as well as education planning.

 

This subject area can be divided into different disciplines. One of the advantages of this integration into specialized academic paradigms is that there is an education science question setting and also an ask practical education setting. Whereas the ask practical education setting is about the teaching of the vocational education and training, the education science question setting deals with prerequisites, processes and results of the vocational education and training.

 

The business education and development as well as VET exist as both bachelor’s and master’s studies. In Germany, there are different facets of this discipline and every respective university and Chair has developed its own profile. This becomes clear in the research of the individual links on this website.
